Surroundings & Hiking
Three whitewashed villages serve as gateways to our yoga retreat center. Zahara de la Sierra is one of Andalusia’s most striking villages, sashaying up a craggy, castle-topped peak in the park’s northern reaches. It is located just 30 minutes away by car. The traditional Olive Oil Factory here is unique in the country. The second, El Gastor, also known as the Balcony of the Andalusian White Villages, is a charming small town, just fifteen minutes from our retreat center by foot. The third, Ronda, sits atop the spectacular El Tajo gorge. Ronda´s fame was spread further by American literary figures Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles who spent much time within the town limits.
Included in the price is two guided hikes.
- Hiking tour to the big Dolmen and/or the White Village balcony
- Hiking tour to Zahara de la Sierra with its famous castle
Designated a Unesco Biosphere reserve in 1977, the Sierra de Grazalema was declared the first natural park in Andalucia in 1984 and is one of Spain's most ecologically outstanding areas. According to BBC Travel this area is the best place to hike in Andalucia. The large park is famous for its spectacularly rugged limestone landscape of cliffs, gullies, caves and gorges. By far the most impressive gorge is Garganta Verde, with its exceptional griffon vulture colony and rocky walls that tower vertically for 400m. Andalucia's largest cave system is also here, the Hundidero-Gato with its biggest cavern measuring 4 km long and an entrance of 60m tall. It has an exceptionally rich bird life, particularly raptors. Mammals include roe deer, Egyptian mongoose, badger, fox and Spanish ibex. As well as the rivers having a healthy otter population.
The trees consist of large cork oaks, holm oak, olive trees and the magnificent and well preserved forest of the rare Spanish fir.
Some parts of the park are controlled in terms of visiting dates and visitor numbers. At times when fire risks are greater (July to September) walks to some areas are closed.
